  I was travelling in the Blue Ridge mountains last week with my wife & kids. While we were visiting Floyd Virginia way up in the top of one of the mountains, we stopped at the "Floyd Antique Mall" because my wife was looking for antique glass jars and bottles. I had nothing better to do so I browsed disinterestedly. I noticed a little gig bag next to an antique upright piano and couldn't resist opening it up to see what was inside. (I've played acoustic guitar for over 40 years.) I pulled out the classical guitar and looked in the sound hole to see that it was an old Harmony. It was a bit dark in the old store so I couldn't see much more. As I began to tune it, a man walked in, looked at me and immediately came over and told me it could be mine for $200. I explained to him that I was just playing around, waiting for my wife and that I already have a guitar collection at home. I figured she'd kill me if I bought another one. It was just an excuse. I wasn't really interested in buying a guitar. I was actually looking for a fiddle, if anything around there. I put it down, he picked it up and started playing some fairly nice classical on it. Not bad. Then he sat down and started to tear up the old piano. He was very gifted and everyone in the store enjoyed the playing. I browsed all 3 floors of the store (listening to him play the whole time) before my wife was finally ready to pay for her treasures and leave. As I started to make my way to the front door, he came back up and whispered in my ear that he really needed to sell the guitar and would let me have it for fifty. The guilt set in 'cause I could see he needed the money. I pulled out all the money I had in my pocket. Sixty-six dollars. I gave him the money and he gave me the guitar. I finished cleaning it up today. Adjusted the neck. Removed some grime and scratches. Lubed up the neck and machines. Put some new strings on it. It looks and sounds good now! I handed it over to my 12 year old son. He's been playing it all evening! Then I decided to research it and that's when I discovered this Harmony Database site. It is a H6290. I couldn't resist to tell my story.

  Awesome, Jim. There is quite a joy in finding a gem like that for a great price. I think that is the greatest joy in guitar hunting. Plus, you did a good deed helping somebody out, too. God bless!

  Found my own Harmony 6290 sitting in a closet after about 35 years of not seeing it. Still great sound--solid, rich, satisfying feel. I now use it for gigs and wouldn't play much else. Love this guy.
