bought one on ebay recently in fairly good shape. It sounds FANTASTIC ! I have had a few archtop tenors but this one really blew me away.
BTW I string all my tenors to GDAE, cause tuning to CGDA is a suicide, it will bow your neck (especially vintage guitars) in months..... - François (webmaster) - 2010-12-01
J.Moffitt, for string tension, you can't talk about tuning without talking about string diameters. You can have the exact same tension in CGDA or GDAE, just use the right strings. - Randy Wood - 2011-01-17
I tune my 1953 monterey DGBD (Banjo tuning). People who don't play guitar are elated because they can strum along and make all major chords with one finger. Later I teach them other chord shapes. This tuning also enhances the tone of the vintage wood. - Joel D Canfield - 2014-06-13
I inherited my grandfather's 1959 Monterey. It's a few months older than I am and probably in better shape.
I've kept mine tuned GDAE because I'm afraid of hurting this old thing. Time to do some research and see how I can get a CGDA tuning which would probably brighten the sound considerably. The low G just has a sort of rattly feel to it. - Michael MJL - 2015-12-06
Just scooped a '63 that needs a bit of love. Some banana heads wrote in sharpie all over it - removed it with elbow grease, naptha and dry eraser. Going to modify it with a duncan P90 antiquity.

I have an H950 Monterey in the usual sunburst finish. Some previous owner doodled all over the top with a sharpie. I'm considering (carefully) stripping it to bare, and refinishing with amber shellac. I just wish I knew what wood the body was made of. If it's spruce or mahogany, that would be great, but for all I know it might be plywood. - Michael H - 2024-08-25
Just acquired a H950 T for $100, in beautiful shape. A little crazing on the finish, but not bad at all. Needs some tune up work but it does play okay. It's a beautiful guitar, made in 1960 as far as I can tell. Found in Wenatchee Washington on Craigslisp. Thank you for this website!
