Acoustic flatop - Black

This model appears in 1971 catalog only and wears the "Sovereign" name, but is a black version of the H166, see also popular H162 model. The H1204 Sovereign was the black version of the "real" H1203 Sovereign.
The H164 was replaced next year by the similar H6364.

I have one of these. I pulled it out of a dumpster at a construction site in it's hard case. The pick guard was missing and some of the paint had chipped. I threw some new strings on it and slapped a big fat sticker where the pick guard was. Its straight with good, relatively low action. Glad I could save it. - Guy Ventura - 2009-01-10
I have had this jewel since 1971. Bought it in Mt Clemens MI. It is still like new and sounds great for a guitar of this price. When my grandson visits, he runs to get his hands on this guitar. He is a great player and enjoys it. He now wants a Les Paul Gibson. What can I say. I am 73 years old and have played guitar since I was about 7. picked my h164 up at a junk store and it played great. I did notice the neck starting to seperat from the body and the plastic is caracked some on front other than that she's cherry - Jay Aitch - 2009-06-15
I recently bought an H164, and inside it is marked S-72. This seems to indicate that this model was indeed made beyond 1971. However, there is faint, illegible number or letter after the S-72, so I wonder if it has any significance regarding manufacture date. - Aartmark - 2009-07-29
I bought one of these guitars brand new in 1971 at a half price sale in a local music store for about $36. Being a lefty I restrung it. I've since put better tuners on it and changed the saddle for left handed playing and put a new nut on it. I also use an old DiArmond pick up on it. It sounds sweet when I plug it into an amp. It sounds much better than the Strat that I have. I hope to be using it more at gigs. I have it strung up with electric guitar strings so I can use it to play leads better. I might also put an acoustic pick up in it too to get an acoustic sound mixed with the electric sound. I love that guitar. Bought one of these at an auction for $25 last weekend. Dusty and dirty and a few dings but neck is super straight and finish is still bright. Date stamp is S72. Can't wait to get new strings on it and see how it plays. - Rick Kimball - 2016-01-25
