Harmony made guitars | Back to brand list

Brand : Silvertone - (1940-1970)
Distributed by Sears & Roebuck

Guitars shown below were made by Harmony and sold under the Silvertone brand. It doesn't mean that all Silvertone guitars were made by Harmony.

Harmony was founded in 1892 and as soon as 1905 was a large supplier for the famous "Sears & Roebuck" catalog. In 1914 Sears introduced the Supertone brand, and in 1916 Sears bought Harmony.
In 1940 Sears sells Harmony to a group headed by Jay Kraus. From this date Sears used the Silvertone brand, but Silvertone guitars were not exclusively made by Harmony (well-known models were made by Danelectro, this page shows only Harmony made instruments though).
From 1970 Sears no more used the Silvertone brand, and sold guitars with its own "SR" (Sears & Roebuck) logo.
You can check some Sears catalogs pages on this site.
For Silvertone models, I used the model number from Sears catalogs. I chose to simplify it as "xxxx", for example the S1446 is the one present in the 1962 catalog as "57K 1446 L", but is stamped inside as "xxxxH1446" (the usual Harmony-made guitars serial stamp).

This model use Gibson pickups never used on any other Harmony, so there is no Harmony equivalent model. With Bigsby vibrato. Used by Hubert Sumlin (with Howlin Wolf) and later by Chris Isaac (his first album was named "Silvertone"). Early Sears catalogs (61-62) show the guitar with different pickups (P13) and pickup's rings, but no sample is found today with these, so we can suppose they just used a touched-up picture before completing the guitar's design. Some samples are reported with double cutaway.

2 pickups and vibrato - Similar to Harmony Rocket H56, but with bound neck. It looks like this Silvertone version was produced only for one year, so it's not common. - (based on Harmony H56)
    • 1453 (1968) - (Rebel) - Electric hollowbody - Redburst - images 16
Compares to Harmony Rebel H82, but has conventional rotative potentiometers instead of linear sliders. Short production time. - (based on Harmony H82)
